Description
One of the oldest residences in Prague situated above the river Vltava, emblazoned with legends of old Czech mythology.
Castle built on rock Vyšehrad, originally called Chrasten, was founded in the 10th century. Time of the greatest glory of Vyšehrad was in the 11th st. when it became the seat of the first Czech king Vratislav I. After 1364 St. Peter and Paul cathedral was reconstructed. Archaeological survey in the church uncovered foundations of the Romanesque apse, which belonged to the basilica that dates after 1070.
In the previous century, a cemetery was built here, where famous personalities of Czech cultural and political life are buried, among other, musical composers Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák and the world-famous writer Karel Čapek.
